Do you know why we’re fat? We’re fat because we’re ignorant. By ignorant I mean we are actually lacking in knowledge or awareness. And because we are ignorant we set stupid goals.

Having a goal to lose weight is a stupid goal.

It really is. I’m not trying to criticize you because I have been there myself. Okay, so maybe “short-sighted” is a better word than ignorant. Let me explain.

You’ve Lost Weight Before…
We’ve all lost weight before. Lots of times. Two pounds here, five pounds there, ten pounds that other time. We achieve our goal over and over again. Then we gain it back. Then we set a new goal … low and behold it’s the same one – “to lose this much weight by this time.” blah blah blah. And you know what? we ‘hit’ those goals again and again. And then you regain the weight again and again. Why? You set a goal to lose weight. Not to keep it off permanently and not to get healthy. You set a shortsighted goal and you hit that goal over and over again.

Different Goals = Different Focus = Different Habits.

You won’t achieve long-term health if you set short term goals. You must set a better goal. And here’s why; Your body will go in the direction that your mind takes it. Your weight loss goal should be something that helps you to achieve a healthy weight and maintain that healthy weight for the rest of your life. For example, you goal should be to be healthy and energetic enough to see your children graduate college. Not simply to lose 20 pounds so you can look good in your wedding dress.

Setting long term health and wellness goals that may have a weight component adjusts our focus from tips and tricks toward habits and change. I will talk more about that in an upcoming article.

Why don’t we set better goals? There are a variety of reasons with the main one being ignorance. Meaning we don’t realize we are setting a dumb goal. One we will reach every time and still not help us become healthy. If you have read this article, you can no longer claim ignorance. It’s time to set a better goal.
