Ann Arbor, MI
—On behalf of the Michigan Department of Human Services, Pete Thomas, the Season 2 At-Home Winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” will encourage Detroit-area individuals and families to consider the rewards of foster care and adoption on Sunday, September 18, 2011.  The event will take place at Greater Grace Church at 23500 W. 7 Mile in Detroit, Michigan.  Registration begins at 3:30.  Dinner will be served.

The event targets the Detroit area faith-based community and endeavors to address many of the myths regarding foster care and adoption.  In addition to Thomas’ presentation, there will be an individual and family testimonial designed to provide insight and inspire those in attendance.

“I’m excited to be a part of this awareness event,” Thomas shares.  “A lot of families don’t know how much support the Department of Human Services actually provides.  There is financial and social support for foster parents—even adoption and medical subsides— and we plan to let attendees know what’s available.”

Sunday’s faith-based event is part of the Department’s on-going “You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent,” campaign to increase the number of homes available for the state’s 14,000 children in care. Thomas underscores the importance of having a home. “I was adopted out of foster care as an older child, and I know how essential a stable home environment is.  Honestly, I don’t know where I would be had I not spent my middle school and high school years in a family setting. People need to know that just by being themselves, they can change the course of a child’s life forever,” says Thomas.

The Department hopes to recruit 1,300 new “non-relative” families to serve as foster parents by June of 2012.  Currently, there are only about 7,000 homes available for the state’s 14,000 children in care.
