Nearly 8 years ago I was listening to this awesome tape Series by Zig Ziglar and in it, Zig described the process whereby he took up running.  He explained his nearly year long journey from hating every minute of running to actually experiencing a runners high.  After listening to that tape I set a goal for myself – I was going to become a ‘runner’.  My only problem at the time was that I was over 410 lbs. But I set the goal!</p>
<p>Since setting that goal <a href="http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs912.snc4/72514_163803576973094_120028528017266_374183_5500855_n.jpg" target="_blank">I have been featured in Runners World</a>, completed 2 Olympic Distance Triathlons, a full Marathon, several half Marathons, too many 5k’s to mention as well as a period of time where I ran 5 miles per day 6 days per week.  </p>
<p> While I am not going to take the time to explain <strong>all</strong> of my struggles and transformation along the way to becoming a runner &#8211; I reserve that for my <a href="http://www.winningman.com/workplace/" target="_blank">Motivational Speeches</a> and the students of my <a href="http://loseitfastloseitforever.com" target="_blank">Lose It Fast</a> program &#8211;  I have learned a great deal of information about running along the way.  So I wanted to give you a couple of articles that should be beneficial no matter what level of runner you are.</p>
<p>Speaking of <em>levels</em> of runners.  Remember that not all information is applicable to <strong><em>you.</em></strong>  Read these articles below with your <em>particular</em> situation in mind.</p>
<p><strong>Is Running Safe?</strong></p>
<p>Heard bad things about <em>Runners Knees</em>?  Well running long term can actually keep you from suffering knee injuries as long as you have never suffered a knee injury to begin with.  How so?  Well the knee actually develops a ‘<em>Motion Grove</em>’ over time that can actually protect the knee.</p>
<p><a href="http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/11/phys-ed-can-running-actually-help-your-knees/" target="_blank">Check out the explanation in this New York Times Article</a></p>
<p>However, <em>newbies</em> may want to watch out for the marathons.  A doctor who specialized in running once told me that the body was not designed to run for 26 miles, especially on hard surfaces. </p>
<p><a href="http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/13/phys-ed-do-marathons-wreck-your-knees/" target="_blank">This article discusses some possible issues with Marathons. </a></p>
<p>But the issues are still being studied and researched. So keep running!</p>
<p> <strong>Beginning, Overweight and Recreational Runners</strong></p>
<p>Buy a motioned controlled, support shoe and take a beginning running class that focus&#8217; on Heart Rate training and learn to &#8216;land&#8217; on your mid and forefoot. Oh, and don’t buy your shoes from the same place you buy your groceries.</p>

<p><strong>Experienced and Competitive Runners</strong></p>
<p>Thinking about Barefoot Running, Vibram Five Fingers or other <em>Minimalist</em> shoes?  Read these two articles and get the whole story first. Basically you want to work your new shoes into your routine <em>slowly</em> to avoid injuries.</p>

<p><strong>Conclusion</strong> </p>
<p>If you are overweight and sedentary you ARE going to get arthritis of the knees and die early of coronary heart disease related to your obesity and miss your grandkids lives.</p>
<p>The other option: Get moving, start walking and then eventually take up running and lose weight and improve your health and live a full healthy life. Oh yeah, you might mess up your knees along the way but by then you can just switch to swimming or cycling, right?</p>

Washington, D.C. </strong>— On October 23, 2010, Pete Thomas, the Season 2 At-Home Winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” teamed up with Executive Chef Robert Hedetniemi of the National Institutes of Health, and Ambassador for First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” Campaign—to encourage healthy eating to the nation’s next generation of scientists and engineers at the Inaugural USA Science &amp; Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C.</p>

<p>As Pete shared the secrets and the science behind his 185 pound weight loss, Chef Hedetniemi cooked up an entire day’s worth of simple, healthy meals to show the audience just how delicious healthy eating can be.  On the menu for the day was:</p>

<p><a href="http://www.winningman.com/wp-content/uploads/Pete_Sprocket1.JPG"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-6199" title="Pete_Sprocket1" src="http://www.winningman.com/wp-content/uploads/Pete_Sprocket1-225x300.jpg" alt="Pete_Sprocket1" width="225" height="300" /></a>Pete and Chef Hedetneimi had fun engaging the audience along the way.  The duo even had a surprise appearance by Sprocket, the walking, talking Robot who heard the “ Biggest Loser” was on stage and came to greet him.   Pete and Sprocket had an entertaining conversation about what it takes to “fuel” the body—at which point we learned that Sprocket runs on a rechargeable battery fueled by electricity. </p>
<p>In just 50 minutes, Pete and Chef Hedetniemi were able to dispel the myth that healthy eating is expensive, tasetless and time-consuming.  Instead, the duo demonstrated how very tasty, economical and time-conscious healthy meals can be.</p>

<div>Hi, I’m Pete Thomas from Ann Arbor, and I’m the At-Home Winner of Season 2 of NBC’s The Biggest Loser.  For the next several weeks, I invite you to follow our weekly blog as we (me, my team of coaches and my students) help Ann Arbor-Area residents learn and apply principles for permanent weight-loss.</div>
<p>Each week, you can expect a combination of inspiration and education. Each blog will focus on one key concept to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.  We’ll also bring you the personal experience of our students as they blog about their weight-loss journey.</p>

<p>So are you ready to lose the weight once and for all?  If so, let&#8217;s get started with the first principle.</p>
<p><strong>Get Moving!</strong></p>
<p>Often my students ask “How do I begin an exercise program?”  My answer is always the same – “Start moving with cardio.” </p>
<p>The best cardiovascular exercise uses the largest muscles in the body to strengthen the heart muscle. These exercises include using machines that simulate stair climbing, running, bicycling and rowing. Cardio can also be done without machine – jumping jacks, mountain climbers and high-steppers are some of the exercises I love to hate. </p>
<p><strong>Move Faster!</strong></p>
<p>Remember that intensity is key. The harder you work, the more calories you’ll burn. You want to work out at or above 85% of your maximum heart rate. (You can determine your maximum heart rate using our heart <a href="http://www.winningman.com/resources/calculators/">rate calculator</a>.  http://www.winningman.com/resources/calculators/  Ultimately, if you burn 500 more calories per day than you eat, you’ll lose one pound per week.</p>
<p><strong>More than Moving…</strong></p>
<p>Having lost 185 pounds in nine short months—and having kept it off for over five years, I fully understand the challenge of losing weight—and I know what it takes.  Whether you have 10-20 pounds to lose or 100 or more, my goal is to help you Master Your Mind, Manage Your Mouth and Multiply Your Muscles so that you can achieve and maintain your weight-loss goals. </p>

<p>Join Pete Thomas from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” and runners from all over Michigan for the 4<sup>th</sup> Annual “Ron Winans Heart of a Champion 5K &amp; 10K” charity run/walk.  The race will take place on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. at the Belle Isle Park Remick Band Shell.  The event is sponsored by The Perfecting Community Development Corporation (PCDC) in Detroit, in partnership with the American Heart Association and the Detroit Medical Center.</p>
<p>A trophy is awarded to the winner in each age category, and each runner to cross the finish line will receive a medal. Participants will receive free health screenings by the Detroit Medical Center, a  commemorative T-shirt and heart disease prevention material from the American Heart Association.</p>
<p> “I’m pleased to be associated with this event,” states Pete Thomas.  “Running and walking improve our cardiovascular health, help to prevent heart disease, and help us to control our weight as well. The “Heart of a Champion 5k-10k”  is a perfect place to start!” </p>
<p>For the avid runner, the “Ron Winans Heart of a Champion 5K &amp; 10K” serves as a perfect training event for upcoming races—including the Crim Festival of Races and the Detroit Free Press Marathon.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I will start to feature the success of many of the participants in my weight loss course, <a href="http://loseitfastloseitforever.com" target="_blank">Lose It Fast, Lose It Forever</a> but I want to take a quick second to mention Fikisha Taylor from my most recent Tuesday night class.  She is like many of my participants with kids and major responsibilities etc.</p>
<p>Yet she was <strong>the</strong> participant that consistently did <strong>all</strong> of her homework <strong>every</strong> week and by <strong>far</strong> won the majority of our weekly Home Work Challenges.</p>
<p>Oh &#8211; and she <strong>must</strong> have been doing some serious reading because she aced the final challenge &#8211; She got every question correct!</p>
<p>From Week 1 she named herself <em><strong>&#8216;Fastly Fading Fikisha&#8217;</strong></em> and put in the effort to live up to that name.</p>
<p><strong>OH YEAH, SHE LOST AN AMAZING </strong><strong>46 </strong><strong>POUNDS DURING OUR TEN WEEKS TOGETHER.</strong></p>
<p>She deserves to be congratulated. I will post an interview of her soon but she is just <em><strong>so</strong></em> laid back about her results.  She is on her way to being one of our Coaches.</p>
