What Does That Extra Weight Do to Your Body?

Do you know what it’s like to be overweight? Let’s say you are 80 pounds overweight. Or, to make it simpler, let’s say you are 40 pounds or 20 pounds overweight. As we go through life, sitting at our desks, reading to our kids at bedtime, strolling through the mall, or sitting and watching TV, a few pounds here or there never feels like much. It’s because the human body God designed is divine in its ability to adapt to any circumstance.

But God didn’t design your body to carry all that extra weight.

Try this experiment. Go to a hardware store and buy a 20 pound bag of sand, hoist it up on your shoulders, and carry it around for an entire day. Better yet, buy two 20 pound bags of sand. What’s 20 pounds among friends, right?

My guess is you’ll only need to do this for about a half-an-hour to realize my point. But if you actually carried it around for an entire day, in the days that followed, you’d notice your back, your legs, and every muscle in your body would be screaming at you, “please stop carrying those 40 pounds of sand.”

And yet, if you are 10, 20, or 40 pounds overweight, this is exactly what you’re doing to your body every day.
